Type - A

Kim, Heidi and Jocelyn - Summer 2010! I'm not saying they are Type - A, I just needed a good picture to remind me - SUMMER WILL COME EVENTUALLY (or I will keel over and die).

There are times when I really feel I am trying to do it all, and frankly, it's too much sometimes!

Wikipedia Says:

Type A

The theory describes a Type A individual as ambitious, aggressive, business-like, controlling, highly competitive, impatient, preoccupied with his or her status, time-conscious, andtightly-wound. People with Type A personalities are often high-achieving "workaholics" who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence.

In his 1996 book, Type A Behavior: Its Diagnosis and Treatment, Friedman suggests that Type A behavior is expressed in three major symptoms: free-floating hostility, which can be triggered by even minor incidents; time urgency and impatience, which causes irritation and exasperation; and a competitive drive, which causes stress and an achievement-driven mentality. The first of these symptoms is believed to be covert and therefore less observable, while the other two are more overt.

Because of these characteristics, Type A individuals are often described as "stress junkies" by individuals with Type B or other personality types. Many successful business and political leaders have Type A personalities.

I typically find that triathletes, like myself, are pretty type-A personalities. I don't necessarily agree with everything described above, but I definitely agree with some! We have a list, we like to check it off and when things are going right on that list, or we just can't seem to get enough done.. well, to be frank, we freak right out.

Although I know this sport lends itself well to this type of personality. Sometimes, between the my day job, the side career, the athletes calling, the workouts, the to-do list for Birthdays, the blog and everything else still required to keep my life going (laundry, groceries etc.) -it's a little.. well.. much.

Lately, I've been wondering just how much more I can take on, while still retaining some semblance of organization, time with my family and friends and sanity. The problem is, I like to be good at.. well, everything. I don't want to feel I'm "shorting" any of these aspects, especially my time with family and friends. However, I think by the very nature of all of these types of things, you can be good at some things, but only great at a limited few.

I've been spending some time thinking about what those few actually are and how that will shape the future of my life. I guess the blessing is that I have a full wonderful life with lots of things to keep me busy. The negative is that one can only stretch so far or be worked so thin! I'm not complaining, just thinking and trying to prioritize and get ready for what's to come. I believe in the fact that there is a plan for my life and if I keep doing what I love, and doing the best I can, that it will be revealed to me slowly and over time. I refuse to give up certain things that seem like they are on the right path for me, so in the mean time, I'll just have to become a really good juggler!! I have great family, great friends and spring is coming (I hope! So in just a few weeks we'll hopefully be riding outside - preferably not at NOLA 70.3 for the first time!).

Do you think most of us are Type-A personalities in the sport of triathlon? I'd love to hear so leave a comment.

Power Bar Spring Giveaway Winner!

The Powerbar Prize Giveaway Basket!

Sorry about delay! The week has been crazy! All I know is that I had no other ideas about how to give this thing away except for the good old fashion way, I cut up little pieces of paper and then pulled one out of a hat (well, envelope). So, each person was given multiple entries based on how many things they participated in (following, spring, etc.) and the winner is.....
Marian!!

Now Marian, I have no information for you (that you have a blog yourself etc.) so you are going to have to contact me to get me your details (address etc.) so this wonderful Powerbar goodness can be mailed out to your doorstep! Thanks to the 30 people who entered and everyone who participated! I appreciate it!! You guys rock!!

Things I have been doing this week:

  • Swimming, Swimming and MORE swimming. I am trying to get in four days per week (most weeks) of swimming if it KILLS ME!! So, this week, luckily, I have made it and it is only Friday.

  • Setting a new swim PR - FINALLY.. the last 100 yard all out swim of the day - 1:10! Yes, you heard it hear first.. I swam a 1:10.. I am so freakin excited! Now, to swim a bunch of these in a row - well, in awhile!

  • Running.. running and more running.. I'm pretty sure my coach is on a huge running / testing streak right now that I am glad may have come to an end. There has more more time spent on a dang track that I have spent since college over these last two weeks. I'm actually a little worried about my cycling there as been so dang much running. It's always something right!

  • Wondering if high school kids know what it means when you yell "TRACK" at them like we did in college. That was code for "get the BEEP out of my way - I'm coming at mock II!!" at Penn State. I had two separate times where I had to run with them on the same track during their warm up and I cannot stand how they just decide to run in inside lane! I know it's their class and all, but please, you're running 12 min pace and I'm trying to bust out something crazy so my coach will be happy my heart rate was at 189 the whole time.. just give me a little tiny bit of space please.. that's all I'm asking.

  • Working, Trying not to consume TOO many girl scout cookies, booking our house / plane tickets for Hawaii (yippee - both are done!) and trying to figure out how I am going to pay for all of it.

  • Getting some interview questions done for Mary E. who will now be working with X Tri a cool new website that covers triathlon related material! Love it!! She's a wonderful writer and I know she'll be sharing some great stories so make sure you check it out! I'll let you know when I finally finish mine and it publishes. I'm so dang honored to even get a chance to share (aka I hope I don't say something dumb).

Lastly, I've been coaching some amazing athletes lately, and one has given me permission to share a bit of his story. We started working together in the middle of December. By this time, Jimmy had already started the process of making over his life. When he realized he had reached an all-time weight high at 274 lbs. he knew he had to do something. He's a Father, Husband and professional, but he knew if he didn't do something, things would be headed south with his health quickly. He began by training for some running races and by the time I began coaching him he was closer to 230 lbs. Let me start off by saying he had worked with his Doctor on making sure he was ready and able to start a triathlon training program and he had signed up for his first half ironman ---- In APRIL. I'm not sure how many of you think this is not much time, but I sure did. Here we are in the middle of Dec. and we're just getting started as a coach and athlete with just over four months to train. This would be Jimmy's first half, and I wanted him to have a good experience.

We started covering all our bases. We worked up slowly, making sure not to build the volume too fast. We built in strength training and some road racing. Finally, it was time to work on those long rides and long runs. Jimmy is one of the most motivated, determined individuals I have met thus far. He would tell me things like "well, the kids will be up on Saturday at 7:00-7:30am so I'm just going to have to start riding at 4:30," and I would delightfully say "yep, just make sure you get some sleep!"

Let me say - we have not even worked FORMALLY on nutrition. He reads, he puts things into practice and then he asks if he has a question. All in all, he's done that part completely on his own.

Just so you see it can be done.. here are some pictures..

If this doesn't help you believe in the benefits of exercise and a positive attitude, I don't know what will. He has just started a blog and I love his post on Forging ahead. So, check that out if you have time.

I hope everyone is doing so well! Thanks for reading!!

10,000 Hours

“Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.” - Albert Einstein
I once heard it takes around 10,000 hours master something, whether it be painting, writing, playing the guitar (Kyle, you have a lot of work to do :), or even triathlon.
The funny part is that when we're doing what we love, most of the time, we barely count the moments, hours or days. We just enjoy the journey and one day we wake up this amazing butterfly, emerging from our cocoon for everyone to see - right?!
Well, maybe for some, but for me, I doubt it will ever be quite like the sentence above. Sometimes I struggle, sometimes I toil, sometimes I slave away working on technique or doing repeats on the track that make me want to hurl. Sometimes I sit in the car with all of my running clothes on at 6:30 at night while the rain pours down on my car and floods the track feeling so run down and just bag the whole thing. That's my life.. that's how it feels to me sometimes.

Other times it's the joy of warmth of the sun beating down on my bike while I watch my closest friends crest the hill in front of me to meet for a ride, or reveling in the sheer determination it took to eek out that last mile repeat and hitting a decent time, or even just speaking to a new triathlete who is totally lost about how to train, or when, or why they are sinking in the pool that makes me smile and remember where I first started.

I'm no where near a master of this sport, or any sport really. I'm not the best, or the brightest or the most interesting. I'm not some amazing person who has it all together.. I'm a type-A personality, multitasking crazy women who has decided to try and do most of the workouts on her schedule, most of the time while still trying to keep the rest of my life in some semblance of order (which may or may not be happening at any particular juncture when you may bump into me :)

As I was trudging up and down the stairs last night to my basement, trying to figure out if I had enough energy to get up and down one more time to take things out of the dryer and I thought "I wonder if everyone else's life is like this while they're trying to master something too!" So, what do you think?? Do you think it takes a 10,000 to master something?? What are you trying to master these days??

Here's some great quotes to get your motivated!

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.
Confucius

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Do not wait for your ship to come in - swim out to it

The photo's I've included show just how beautiful my mastering of this sport is at times (aka.. not so much!) but I certainly don't intend to stop trying any time soon.. you can count on that :)

Riders On The Storm

If you put Pittsburgh triathletes inside long enough on their trainers.. you get some conversation like this over email chain about mid-March..

Triathlete 1: What are everyone's ride plans for this weekend?

Triathlete 2: Sat

Mar 12

Few Showers
Few Showers

46°
35°

If this holds up, I’ll probably opt to ride indoors for this weekend…however, I can be talked into anything.

Triathlete 3: If dry and upper 40's, I'll be outside for 3-3.5 on Saturday.

Me: Me too, if its dry. I have 3.5 Saturday and then 2.5 on Sunday too.

Triathlete 1: No computrainers available on Saturday, so its BYOT if we're inside, if we can ride there at all.

Triathlete 2: I guess we are Lance Armstrong-ing that up and riding outside NO MATTER WHAT!!

Triathlete 4: Bring it mutha natcha!!!!!!

Triathlete 2: Oh.. she brought it:

Winter storm watch issued

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

If the relentless rain and flooding has gotten you down, the National Weather Service has a twist in store -- a winter storm watch has been posted for Western Pennsylvania for Thursday evening through Friday evening.

Six inches or more of snow is possible during that time, along with wind gusts up to 25 mph, meteorologist Lee Hendricks said today.

Triathlete 5: I'm going back to Tucson and never coming back. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Me: Me tooooooo!!!!!

Triathlete 2: I'm all in favor for piling in a van after work tomorrow and driving south until we hit warm weather...just saying. Do I hear Road Trip?

Triathlete 1: So maybe Virginia Beach or south?

Triathlete 6: The brass band truck can easily hold 20 bikes.

Triathlete 2: I vote Brass Band Van to Virgina Beach! Leave tomorrow night.......and we make a 3 day weekend out of it with some sunny training!!! Now who's with me? Heck, we've all ridden our bikes for 7 hours so a 7 hour drive is a piece of cake? :)

Triathlete 7: I'm in!

Triathlete 1: I am seriously liking this plan - the weather seems just nice enough and the plan just crazy enough (and surely memorable enough in a jazz band truck hijacked!!) that it seems worth doing!

Could you actually get this truck for the weekend?? If so, what would be the upper limit you think on the number of passengers/bikes/luggage we could squeeze into that badboy???

Triathlete 6: Dudes. sorry. I was kidding. Does sound great though. If I didn't have rehearsal Saturday afternoon I seriously risk my job for it!

Man.. now that is some people who are ready to get outside and ride their bikes!! Hope everyone else's weather is better than Pittsburgh!!

Protein? Do Athletes Need More?

Proteins

If you hang around with athletes long enough, you will always hear them discussing certain topics, and protein is one of them. Male bodybuilders will obsess over everything from what types or amounts of protein are the best to the timing of their protein intake. Endurance athletes won't talk about it quite that much. However, they certainly pay attention to it, and rightfully so! Making sure you have enough protein as part of an overall healthy diet is important to help rebuild muscle tissue that sustains tears during intense physical training.

What is protein for? Here are a few key things:
  • It provides essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of cells.
  • It aids in the development of new tissues, and allows the growth and repair of damaged tissues.
  • It helps produce important enzymes that are essential for rebuilding our system, not to mention hormones and other antibodies to keep our immune system healthy.
  • It transports substances in the blood
  • It keeps the fluid balance of our bodies in check
  • It provides very minute amounts of energy during exercise (especially endurance exercise)
Are the needs of athletes higher than the general population?

YES! Athletes do need more protein than those who are not training for an event. Certain phases of training may even require more than others. If you are trying to build more muscle during the off-season, this could be a time of heavy strength training and therefore, increased protein needs. However, while getting enough protein is certainly important to do all the functions mentioned above, protein in excess is still excess calories, and therefore, will be stored as fat if it is not able to be used to build or repair muscle tissues etc.

Calculating Your Protein Needs

Daily protein needs are dependent on two things, your body weight and your amount / type of training. If you participate in a moderate aerobic exercise routine (e.g., you work out for fitness, workout 3-4 days per week for 30-60 minutes per day), then your protein needs are at least 0.5 grams of protein per pound. This would produce a need of around 100 grams per day for a 200 pound athlete.

However, as you start working out harder, your needs also increase. During a competition phase, where you are both training and competing, you may have longer workouts of 60 mins+ on more days of the week than not. Your body needs additional protein in this phase for building new muscle and maintaining current muscle mass. Protein needs during this phase can be as high as 1.0 grams per pound. For that same 200 pound athlete, this would be closer to 200 grams per day. Intakes higher than 1.0 grams per pound have not be shown to be beneficial for athletes, and should be avoided due to additional stress on the kidney / excess possible weight gain.

Using a number somewhere in the middle of these two (0.5 grams per pound and 1.0 grams per pound), depending on your phase of training, is a good place to start.

What are good sources of high quality protein?

There are plenty of options when it comes to high quality protein, and they don't have to be expensive or hard to find. Below you will find some great examples of items to include in your diet.

Protein Sources:

  • Eggs
  • Skim or Low fat milk
  • Beans
  • Lean Meats (look for ground beef that is 90% lean)
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Canned Tuna or chicken
  • Textured Vegetable Protein
  • Peanuts, Almonds or other nuts
  • Low fat cheeses, like mozzarella or cheddar

When choosing meats, always go for the lower fat versions with less marbling and skinless turkey or chicken breast. Protein can also be found in grains and vegetables, but the amount is smaller. In addition, iron from meat sources is more available to our bodies, so it is a good idea to consume meat sources for that reason as well. The best idea is to vary your protein sources to allow you to obtain many different nutrient sources, vitamins and minerals. By including different types of proteins in your diet you have a better overall protein balance, not to mention you don't get sick of any one type.

Staying at your best involves attention to detail and some planning, but it certainly is worth it in the end. If you have additional questions, I suggest you contact a Registered Dietitian who can help you design a more specialized protein plan to fit your needs.

Feel free to leave comments! I would love to hear from you!

Fueling The Female Athlete & Goodbye Nate!

Last week was a bit of a blurrrrr!

I think I mentioned I had many activities outside of training and work that made coordination just a tad bit touchy (and also resulted in a general lack of sleep and disgruntled attitude at times - sorry family, friends, husband etc.). However, I manged to keep things going and for the most part, had a good time making new friends and keeping my sanity!

Wednesday night I was one of two speakers featured at Trek of Shadyside for their winter lecture series. My topic was "Fueling the Female Athlete" for ladies night (and the feelin's right, oh this is ladies night, oh what a night :)

I was very excited to see such a great turnout and some females who like to get out there, ride their bikes and just generally support each other and learn!
The snack table - always a winner!!
Gray, my contact coordinator, did an exceptional job promoting and planning the session. They even had a representative from Trek come in and show all of us some basics and refresh others of us on changing a tire (I'll take the tricks and tips I can get there!) and allowing us to ask all those questions about our seats that as female in a male group, we sometimes feel silly talking about!
Even though we started at 7:00pm, the first speaker didn't finish until about 8:10pm. I was more than a bit worried, because if these ladies were anything like me, they would be dropping like files when the close got close to 8:30 and I had an entire full hour presentation planned :(

Garvin, my mechanic, and really, really good friend! He's the man - (see him a Top Gear most of the time)
This cute little guy riding like a pro. Loved it!
So, as the talk went on, I kept letting these ladies know that if they had to leave, I certainly wouldn't be offended. However, they just kept saying "Nope! We love it! Go on!!" So I did! Until 9:24pm - which I promptly announced was usually my bed time!!
They were a really wonderful audience and they had some excellent questions. The best part of sharing nutrition advice is that you really feel like you are helping people and breaking it down in a way they can understand is probably the hardest (and best) part of what I do. It was a blast all in all, and I was so happy I was able to help out.

I'll be back this week talking about "Your First Triathlon" at the shop on Wed. so please come out if you are in town. Chad and I will be discussing our Sprint and Olympic Distance Triathlon Training programs for the summer. We had a wonderful group of athletes last year, and this year shouldn't be any different.

Then it was finally the weekend. Kyle and I had a big evening planned on Saturday with a surprise party for our friend, and local athlete, Nate, who is leaving town soon to take another job.
We didn't do that well with knowing what to yell at him when he came in, but I still think he was pleasantly surprised and had fun. We also sung Happy Birthday to him just for fun.
I brought a chocolate cake that was from my office that I'm pretty sure was so rich it might have actually killed someone. I attempted to eat a whole piece (as did Jocelyn above) but it just didn't happen!
Kyle and Jeremy (the other Cornman, as I sometimes call him!). They looked very nice that even.. proper gents!
Little Matty
My Christmas Present (I hope! :)
Don't even ask, but I don't think this picture looks anything like me for some reason!
Joc and I!
Chad and Jen
A sad face that Nathaniel is leaving us, but a happy face (that you don't see here) in the hopes that he will like his new job in Maison! We'll miss you Nate!

Hope all is well out there in blogland!
